FILEM

(Single channel video, duration: 11’14)

Filem means film in the Malay language. Once commonly used in Singapore till the immediate post-war era, it has since given way to its English counterpart along with the once thriving local film industry. Set on the film set of a problem-riddled production, Filem looks at the revival of the Singaporean film industry since the 90s, dominated almost entirely by Chinese language films, and the habitual need for every emerging film industry to produce a historical action epic.

Thus, announcing its arrival internationally. An English language film with mandarin dialogue, and a plethora of actors butchering the Chinese language, Filem looks at Singapore in context to the rest of the Chinese-speaking world.
